Light Up the Night for the Arts! December 11th, 2010

The Rowan Arts Council is very proud and pleased to announce that the 2010 “Light Up the Night for the Arts” holiday gala will feature the special and enchanting musical offerings of Elaine Funaro on Davis Cooke’s and Mark Bias’ world-class harpsichord. Elaine Funaro is known throughout the United States and Europe for her original programming for the harpsichord. She holds degrees from Oberlin and the New England Conservatory and has studied at the Conservatorio Cherubini in Florence and the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam.

For twelve years, Ms. Funaro produced the "Music in the Museum" concerts at the Duke University Museum of Art, a series featuring harpsichord music from Africa and Latin America. She was awarded an Emerging Artist grant by the Durham Arts Council for a "Music for Women" recital. A past president of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society and a judge for the Aliénor Harpsichord Composition Competition, Ms. Funaro's recent performances have included appearances at the Berkley Early Music Festival, the Breckenridge Music Festival, Amsterdam Harpsichord Week, the Boston Early Music Festival, the Amherst Early Music Festival, the Smithsonian Institution, Merkin Hall in New York, and Spivey Hall in Atlanta.

Elaine Funaro, a past president of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society, currently serves as Executive Director of Aliénor, a word derived from the French names of Eleanor of Aquitaine, an active organization in Durham that promotes new music for the harpsichord through concerts, commissions, and competitions such as the Aliénor Harpsichord Composition Competition. She has recorded for Gasparo, Wildboar and Centaur, and has released many CD's of her work as a baroque and modern harpsichordist.

Elaine, with her imaginative presentation on the harpsichord, will kick off the Rowan Art’s Council’s 3rd annual “Light Up the Night for the Arts” holiday gala that raises funds for the Arts-in-Education grants in Rowan County. Arts-in-Education grants support arts education for school age children through a variety of programs.

The balance of the evening will feature classical guitar brilliantly performed by Robert Howle. Rob Howle began playing guitar at 9, and began classical guitar at 23, after being inspired by a recording given him by his father. He bought his first handmade classical guitar at 24 and still plays it today. He took courses at the University of South Carolina, majoring in music performance, and moved to the Salisbury area in 1991. Rob has also studied guitar at the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston Salem, and at Catawba College. He works with the Rowan Public Library system at the South Rowan Regional Library, balancing that with practice, playing, and giving lessons.

These superb artists can be heard at “Light Up the Night for the Arts” on Saturday, December 11th, 2010 at the home of Mark Bias and Davis Cooke on South Jackson Street. Festivities and music begin at 7:00PM and will feature Mary Berrier‘s gourmet hors d’oeuvres from the wonderful Buttercup Café & Catering. Chefs Mary and Lee Berrier, proprietors of the Denton catering service, have enhanced many events throughout Rowan County’s entertainment scene.

Calling all Artists to Think Big and Create Small

The Green Goat Gallery is pleased to announce it will be hosting the perennial holiday favorite “Miniature Show” established by Salisbury’s Fine Frame Gallery. Due to planned renovations to the Fine Frame Gallery building, Bruce and Jackie Wilson will not host this year's event. Green Goat Gallery owner Anne Waters says, “Needless to say, I was thrilled to be asked to take it on.”

As in years past, all mediums will be accepted with a two-piece maximum per artist. All two dimensional artwork must be framed and ready to hang in a 5” x 7” or smaller frame. There is a five dollar fee per entry and all items will be offered for sale through the gallery as per its regular terms. There will be an opening reception for the artists on Sunday, December 12, from 5 to 8 in the evening to coincide with the monthly Second Saturday Art Crawl. Regional Artist Project Grant Program ~ Deadline August 6, 2010

The Regional Artist Project Grant Program provides an award for individuals and groups of unincorporated artists to pursue projects that enhance their artistic development. The program is administered by the Arts and Science Council, Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Inc., in partnership with the arts councils in Cabarrus, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Rowan, Rutherford and York (SC) counties; the program is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, the Blumenthal Endowment, and the participating arts councils.

This year Visual Artists and Filmmakers are eligible to apply for the 2010 deadline. Performing artists and writers will be eligible to apply in 2011.

Two grant information sessions are scheduled for interested applicants:

The Rowan Arts Council Annual Meeting

The Rowan Arts Council held its annual meeting June 28th, 2010, at the Norvell Theater on Fisher Street, attended by about 50 Rowan County residents and arts community. 2009-10 President Bruce Wilson opened the meeting with some welcoming remarks and special guest speaker Reid Leonard of the Piedmont Players spoke about the history theaters in Salisbury and of the making of the newly established Norvell Theater.

Executive Director Anne Cave presented awards for the 2009-2010 year:

The Zimmerman Award, often referred to as the “Zimmy”, was presented to Janie Allen, and Edward and Susan Norvell. The Zimmerman Award is the Rowan Arts Council’s most prestigious and visible volunteer award for support of the arts in our community. This award symbolizes that individuals have the power and ability to make a difference in our art community and the lives of others. The Arts Council issues this award annually in recognition of remarkable service, a lifetime of passion for the arts, and for the impact the recipient has on the lives of others and on the community. This award acts as a symbol to members and the public that volunteers can work together to promote the arts in Rowan County. The Rowan Arts Council has long valued the spirit of volunteerism and the important contributions this special RAC volunteer makes to our community, neighbors, and the artists and arts we serve.

Annette Ragone Hall was awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award. Both this award and the “Zimmy” recipients are chosen for their exemplary work in enhancing the Rowan Arts Council’s mission, improving the arts community, and inspiring others to volunteer.

The Rowan Arts Councils 2010 interns, Katelyn Patterson and Grace Nicholson were introduced and thanked.

The Council welcomed the new Board for 2010-2011 and voted new officers into place. The 2010-2011 Board members are Sue McHugh; Anne Waters; Suzanne White; Toby Hagmaier; Sean Meyers; Brenda Gariepy; JR Dunkley; Bruce Wilson; Lee Toth; Barbara Richmond; Joan Zimmerman; Kimberly Etters; Ed and Shirl Hull.

The Rowan Arts Council is please to support area City/County art groups with funding and other support. The main recipients of grant funding from the Council are Piedmont Players Theatre; Salisbury-Rowan Symphony; Waterworks Visual Art Center; Carolina Baroque; Carolina Artists; Choral Society; Concert Choir; Rowan Blues and Jazz Society; Rowan Community Concert Association.

The RAC also reviews and grants Grassroots Grants. This year’s Grassroots Grant recipients were Waterworks Visual Art Center: Salisbury-Rowan Symphony; Piedmont Players Theatre; Amadeus Youth Chorus; Choral Society; Concert Choir; Knox Middle School Band; Rowan Blues and Jazz Society; Rowan Parks and Recreation.

The Rowan Arts Council holds the annual Art-On-Easy-Street Festival, which is quickly becoming a tradition in Salisbury. This year’s festival was held May 15th. The Rowan Arts Council also grants Arts in Education Grants and sponsors a student art exhibit for Rowan Cabarrus Community College annually. The annual Light Up the Night holiday event was held at the Rowan Museum and catered by Lee Piper. Attendees were entertained by the Salisbury Swing Band and helped to raise over $7,000 with purchases from a silent auction and donations.

Executive Director Anne Cave and past Director Marietta Smith attended a special conference offering guidance for non-profit organizations. A Robertson Grant funded the conference fees.

In addition to these activities, the Rowan Arts Council has expanded its horizons this year. The new Second Saturday Art Crawl is a new event promoting local artists and tourism. Local art studios and galleries are opened to the public every second Saturday of the month, often providing refreshment and live entertainment. The trolley takes visitors to each venue, making for a fun day in Salisbury monthly and encouraging participation in the arts here. Brochures and maps are located at the Arts Council’s office at the Lee Street Studios and Gallery at 413 North Lee Street, or at the Rowan County Convention & Visitors Bureau at 204 East Innes Street. The Arts Council added a new grant opportunity to their repertoire, The Albert H Rehn Acoustic Music Performance and Artistry Grant, whereby one artist will be selected to receive $500 to further their acoustic music endeavors. The Rowan Arts Council now uses Facebook, in addition to its web page (www.rowanarts.org), and keeps an active blog to further communication with the community (www.rowanartscouncil.blogspot.com). And lastly, the Council received a donation of a library of art books and a quantity of art supplies from the family of Nancy Rogers. RAC used this donation to offer a sale as a successful fundraiser.

The RAC Annual Business meeting ended with a tour of the Norvell Theater and a meet-&-mingle hour in the lobby with refreshment provided by local caterer Cherie Turner of the North Main Historic Neighborhood (NOMA – www.north-main.org).

The Rowan Arts Council looks forward to a new and exciting fiscal year 2010-2011. Among the ongoing activities, there is a major membership blitz planned in the coming year. Membership is an important component of the Arts Council, its funding, and its ability to communicate to and support the arts community. The vision and mission of the Arts Council closely coincides with the City of Salisbury’s Cultural Action Plan (www.salisburync.gov - Cultural Action Plan). The Rowan Arts Council announces that submittals are now being accepted for The Albert H. Rehn Acoustic Music Performance & Artistry Grant.

The Albert H. Rehn Grant promotes and awards excellence in Acoustic Music Performance and Artistry. The Albert H. Rehn Grant is open to emerging artists in the field of acoustic music: performing, writing, recording, creation of acoustic musical instruments. This grant is open to artists in Rowan County, North Carolina whose works might have difficulty being aired. Recipients may use funds to set aside time to create art, improve their skills, or to do what is most advantageous to enhance their artistic careers.

The Rowan Arts Council began The Albert H. Rehn Grant in 2010 to honor Susan Rehn McHugh’s father and locally cherished acoustic musician, Albert Rehn. Albert Rehn frequented Salisbury and could often be found playing American, Irish, and Scottish folk tunes at downtown venues. Albert Rehn is a beloved friend to many a Salisbury acoustic musician. Albert Rehn has a long history of bringing acoustic music to the lives of the people around him. Born and raised in Boston, MA, an honored World War II U.S. Navy veteran, and a long-term resident of Rochester, NY, Albert has played guitar, banjo, autoharp, and mandola publicly and privately from the 1950’s to the new millennium, providing over 50 years of acoustic music. A mechanical engineer for the Eastman Kodak Company by day for over 30 years, Albert taught guitar lessons as an adjunct professor for the Continuing Education system for many years and hosted his own acoustic radio program performing an ever-expanding repertoire of folk music. Even into his 80’s, Albert continues to perform acoustic folk music at benefits, centers for the aging, and festivals.

The Rowan Arts Council will award the Albert H. Rehn Acoustic Music Performance & Artistry grant once annually. The amount of the grant is $500 to be awarded to an artist whose work reflects this important theme in his or her life.

The award will be is based on originality, creativity, and/or craftsmanship. The award
candidate will demonstrate accomplishment of previous work, as well as the level of
commitment and potential for further growth in the field of Acoustic Music Performance and Artistry.

The Albert H. Rehn Grant is open to:
• Acoustic music artists, songwriters, bands or groups, instructors, and luthiers residing in Rowan County, North Carolina
• Individuals, groups, or arts organizations whose primary address is in Rowan County, North Carolina

The Rowan Arts Council provides The Albert H. Rehn Grant in support of acoustic artists whose art transcends the museum or gallery into alternative spaces and into the spaces of daily life. The Albert H. Rehn Grant can be used to pursue creative projects, personal development, music business collaboration, marketing, networking, or obtain the tools needed for displaying the artists’ work or talent in the field of Acoustic Music Performance and Artistry. The award will be is based on originality, creativity, and/or
craftsmanship. The award candidate will demonstrate accomplishment of previous work, as well as the level of commitment and potential for further growth in the field of Acoustic Music Performance and Artistry.

Applications for The Albert H. Rehn Grant are reviewed once annually. The application deadline is midnight, June 30th, 2010. Applications received after the deadline will be reviewed in the subsequent grant cycle. Applicants will be notified about the status of their application within 60 days of the deadline.

Applicants are encouraged to provide genres and styles of music not likely to be experienced as a part of their normal daily lives, with particular attention paid to original composition and artistry, and to plan a project that supports the imaginations of all acoustic artists while maintaining relevance to The Albert H. Rehn grant mission and goals.

Please provide a proposal and a portfolio that includes any of the following:
Performances, concerts, recordings, video, CD’s, mp3, photographs, artist collaborations, past accomplishments, future plans.

Your proposal should include:
• A brief description of your acoustic artistry and its initiatives
• How your program relates to the goals and mission of The Albert H Rehn grant
• Your specific acoustic music goals
• How you measure the impact of your acoustic music artistry
• How you measure the sustainability of your acoustic music artistry
• Any promotional material, such as newsletters, publications or videos.
• Your future acoustic artistry aims and objectives
• Detail of your core activities
• What will your purpose for the grant be? (example: song competition, recording costs, project based, instrument purchase or repair, education, etc).?

Acoustic music education applicants will be considered.

There will be no consideration for:
• Religious, political, labor, athletic, or fraternal organizations
• Operating deficits or debt retirement
• Music therapy and dance
• General requests for operating funds or capital campaigns
• Event sponsorships such as, but not limited to walks, runs, or golf tournaments
• Programs serving people and communities outside the U.S.
• Choral groups

The Albert H. Rehn Grant Selection Committee requests that a final report on the results of the acoustic music artistry project, along with photographs and/or audio recordings, be submitted to the Rowan Arts Council within 30 days of completion of the project. Recipients may be required to complete periodic evaluations throughout 2010.

Because the grant funding is limited, the Selection Committee must:
• Exercise a wide discretion in determining appropriate priorities for support
• Reserve the right to reject any application notwithstanding its compliance with the required purpose.

Mark your calendar for the2nd Saturday of every month when art galleries throughout downtown Salisbury and Spencer will host receptions and art openings! With our growing community of art and artists, this is a must see and do in our community. Numerous eateries and shops will entice art enthusiasts along the way. What a great way to usher in Spring, spend an enjoyable and cultural Saturday afternoon and evening. Stay through the evening and enjoy one of Salisbury's music or theatre venues. The Salisbury~Rowan Symphony Guild's Garden Symposium ~ March 20th, 2010

The Rowan Arts Council is pleased to announce that the Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Guild in cooperation with the Cooperative Extension in Rowan County – Darrell Blackwelder – Interim Director/Horticulture will host a Garden Symposium. It will benefit the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra and its educational programs on Saturday, March 20, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2727-A Old Concord Road, Salisbury, NC 28146.

The Guild has invited four noted North Carolinian gardeners and designers to discuss the challenges – and joys - of gardening in the state, which has three USDA Hardiness Zones. Due to the large variations in weather, plants that flourish in one part of the state may do poorly or fail in another area.

Pam Beck, a popular garden writer and photographer who is co-author of Best Garden Plants for North Carolina, is the Symposium’s keynote speaker. Ms. Beck emphatically believes “it is time [North Carolina gardeners] re-evaluate their landscapes and their relationships with it.” She will present inventive ways to create a harmonious garden that is beautiful, sustainable and enjoyable throughout the year.

Award-winning extension agent, conservationist and master gardener instructor Toby Bost will share designs for low-maintenance, high-impact landscapes appropriate for the state. Charlotte artist Stephen Baldwin will demonstrate how to convert “found objects” in the garden and nature into exquisite home accessories, while Salisbury designer Tom Wolpert will reveal his secrets for putting vegetables center stage as the stars of home décor.

The Symposium also will offer an exhibition hall with vendors, horticultural displays and book signings.

Waterworks is hosting the Artists’ Expo 2011, featuring the work of both individual artists and collective artists’ groups, on April 7-9, 2011.

This three-day art show in the F&M Trolley Barn provides a unique opportunity for you to present and sell your art. The show will open Thursday evening, April 7 with a Preview Dinner and will be open to the public on Friday and Saturday.

The Rowan Arts Council is in need of a beautiful, colorful, and original background for our 2010 Art on Easy Street billboard and poster!

Please submit a jpg of 300-600 dpi by January 31, 2010 to be entered in a contest for billboard/poster art!

The 2010 Art on Easy Street Festival will be held May 15th when Easy Street will once again be transformed by art.Easy Street is located between North Main Street and Lee Street between Liberty and Council Streets. Sponsored by the Rowan Arts Council, the annual Art on Easy Street event feature more than 100 artists and craftsmen -- from Virginia to Florida -- who will gather for demonstrations and to show and sell their work. Live music often enlivens the event.

The billboard, featuring YOUR ARTWORK, will be seen along Interstate 85 advertising the event. Your artwork will grace the posters and other associated event marketing pieces.

Art Classes in 2010

Robert Crum, professional fine artist, is a new member of Rowan Arts Council. In 2010, he will offer classes in figure drawing and Grisaille. Classes will meet on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30 - 8:30 during the month of January. The cost for four classes is $70. The Rowan Arts Council is sponsoring the second annual "Light Up the Night for Art" gala holiday event! Join us in this special celebration of the mosaic of the arts we have here in our community.

The "Light Up the Night for Art" celebration will be held:

Ticket donation is $75.00 per person

Sponsorship opportunities are a $400.00/couple donation and tax deductible.

The "Light Up the Night for Art" proceeds fund the Arts in Education Grant. The evening includes dining, holiday refreshment, entertainment, and art by our local artists. A very special evening indeed!

Kudzu at Piedmont Players' Theatre

Kudzu is a fun, FUN, show! The songs are upbeat and the singers sing well. The ensemble members were well-chosen for a beautiful blending of voices. Some of the actors played dual roles in the band. All who attended thoroughly enjoyed going and we know that the second week will be just as successful. A great town has a great community theatre!

Art Leaders Roundtable - Meets Tuesday October 20th @ 11:00 AM

The Art Leaders Roundtable meets quarterly at the Rowan Arts Council facility at 413 E. Lee Street. At this meeting, artists and leaders from our local arts organizations meet to discuss and update our local planning calendar as well as share news and views about the arts in our community. This quarters meeting is scheduled for Tuesday October 20th at 11:oo AM.

Syed Ahmad – East Square Artworks, Anne Scott Clement – Waterworks, Sarah Hall – Looking Glass, Dale Higbee – Carolina Baroque, Jeff Holshouser – Salisbury Parks & Rec, Linda Jones – Symphony, Eleanor Qadirah – Rowan Blues & Jazz, Marietta Smith – Rowan Arts Council, Karen Windate – Center for Faith & the Arts, Floyd Walcher – Rowan County Concert Association all attended the last Art Leaders Roundtable meeting, held in July 09.

The group looked over the newest print-out of the planning calendar and added / corrected information. Representatives mentioned programs coming up and invited participants to attend.

Marietta Smith requested group input on whether Art on Easy Street should remain the 3rd Saturday in June or move to an earlier (cooler) date. Concensus was moving to an earlier date was a good idea. The Art on Easy Street Festival 2010 is now scheduled for Saturday May 15th.

Syed Ahmad explained that the East Square Artworks group will be doing more traveling and therefore will not be able to host the Pecha Chuka program this year. He offered to help anyone else who might be willing to take it on. He also talked about an African Drumming / Dance group touring the US this fall and wondered if anyone would be interested in sponsoring the group to come to Salisbury. Sarah Hall explained that we will need to be proactive in sending our information to the Post. We should send media releases with all the detail and information we would like to have included. Photos are welcome. The ideal size for photos is 1mb. They should be sent as an attachment. Deadline is one week ahead though info can be sent earlier especially if it is a big feature story. Info should be sent to both Katie Scarvey and Sarah Hall at the post (kscarvey@salisburypost.com and shall@salisburypost.com)

Eleanor Qadirah announced that the 2011 Blues and Jazz festival will NOT be the same weekend as October Tour because of shortage of hotel rooms and because both events have grown so large. We can email rbjs@carolina.rr.com for more information.

Anne Scott Clement announced a new Waterworks fundraiser on Nov 6 – the big Chill”i” to complete the year’s 50th anniversay celebration and that they will be doing the Artists Invitational again in April.

Jeff Holshouser said Parks & Rec will host a father/daughter dance at the civic center Feb 6.

Karen Windate announced that St Thomas Players has added a Sunday matinee to the schedule. “Proof” coming up in August.

Grassroots Grants Awarded~!

The Grassroots Grants 2009-2010 have been awarded. We receive many applicants that are reviewed for their qualifications as they match the requirements of the Grassroots Grant program. After the finalists are chosen, an extensive interview process is conducted with an assembled review panel. The panel and applicants met throughout an 8-hour session on September 25th. The Grassroots Grant panel this year included:

The Grassroots Grants provide program or operating support through subgrants to Arts Organizations that do not have access to operating support from the North Carolina Arts Council. One of the primary purposes of the Grassroots funds is to support quality arts programs that reach and impact a broad cross-section of the county's citizens and youth. To ensure that Grassroots arts programs reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of our state, the RAC is required to spend a perentage of its annual county allotment on multicultural programming. Grassroots funds are used to support quality arts programs that are conducted within the county or for local programs funded through subgrants to other arts organizations. Examples of arts programs funded with Grassroots funds include:

RAC at the Piedmont Players Youth Theatre Ground Breaking Ceremony Today

The Rowan Arts Council received an invitation from the Board of governors and Staff of the Piedmont Players Theatre to celebrate the Piedmont Players Youth Theatre Ground Breaking Ceremony today at 135 Fisher Street. Sue McHugh attended on behalf of RAC. The event was well attended. Mayor Susan Kluttz gave a wonderful speech praising Salisbury for its ability to provide such a wonderful outlet for the youth of Salisbury, particulary in such trying financial times.

The Piedmont Players Theatre is one of the affiliate organizations that the Rowan Arts Council supports through grant distributions. We are proud to support the new Youth Theatre.
